Anonymous asked: Could you talk more about the differences between the Tankōbon and Bunkobon versions of Number 5? I've got two copies of volume 3, one in Japanese and the other in French, and the only things I noticed at the time were that the sizes were slightly different and the colour inserts were all black and white. Do you know which version the ipad scans are from? Anyway, Taiyo Matsumoto is my favourite comic creator, so thanks for the great blog! -Marcel O'Leary
Different versions:
The Bunkobons are split into four books, come in a slightly smaller size(not completely sure on this) and in a slip-case. Pages were grayscaled. Bonus pages(like the ad for the Rainbow toys or the TIME magazine cover), the “Continue to the next Chapter!!” and preview pages were taken out but it does include posters of all 8 original covers. It also comes with a bonus prequel chapter about Victor’s squad in the Arctic tasked with hunting down a giant moose. Some of the art was retouched(mostly fixing Donovan’s missing mustaches) or some cases redone, especially in the later volumes. Chapter 36 - Utopia was stretched out with an extra 5-10 pages, I’ve posted before all the ones I’ve noticed.
The Tankōbons were 8 volumes, colour pages and bonus pages(don’t know if these were including in the original serialization or added later to these Tankobons) were left intact. Art, I’ll assume wasn’t touched since the serialization.
The French Volumes were based on the Tankobons. Some preview pages were omitted. Tons of bonus info, mostly trivial things about ikki magazine and seinen manga.
The English Volumes were flipped and have some colour pages grayscaled. Preview pages weren’t included(not sure on this). On two volumes were released. At the time Viz was planning to implement a no drop policy in the future and No. 5 being their lowing selling series at the time, they dropped it like fresh lionsheep turds.
The Korean Volumes look to be based on the Bunkobons.
The Collected/Limited Editions are hard to find any info on. For all I know it could just be one giant Omnibus. About 11 inches tall. Includes toy of Yuri, bonus art and articles about the world it’s set in. Seems to pop up on ebay from time to time. Found someone selling it for a decnt price(I guess?) here(includes cool pics).
The iPad Version is made up mostly of the Bunkobon version with exception to the first four chapters which are of the Tankoban and the colour pages. Translation is by Yuki Oniki(Same person behind the orginal Engliah ones). All that was excluded was the prequel chapter I believe. Includes both English and Japanese, Full version of that animated short, iPad wallpaper and a new interview with Taiyou himself.
You don’t need an iPad to download and view it, there are ways to get around it. Not seeing it through an iPad some how blocks access to the interview however.
